A question leaves a speech bubble and follows a trail of dots into a phone; the AI answers with three business cards, and yours rises to the top and lights up in red.

Does AI recommend you… or not?

These are five typical cases, with real questions from five sectors. See how AI tends to answer in cases like these and what can change when your website, your listings and your sources say the same thing. The businesses are not real and the result is not guaranteed: it depends on each case.

What the AI reads about your business

With Balisk With your data clear, the AI can now name you because you serve those buying from abroad.

Before answering, AI checks sources.

The AI splits your question into several searches, reads what it finds in its index and checks it against what others say about you.

How an answer is decided

  1. 01 Fan-out queries

    It opens up the question

It splits it into several searches: “best”, “reviews”, your area, the year.

  2. 02 Retrieval

    It searches its index

Google, Bing or its own crawler. It keeps the passages that answer directly and with facts.

  3. 03 Sources

    It checks what others say

Press, reviews, directories and forums confirm, or contradict, what your website says.

  4. 04 Entity

    It decides whom to name

It checks that your name, address and services match everywhere.

03 What AI reads in each source

The AI answer, in the centre, linked to press, reviews, directories, forums and your website, which lights up in red.
  • Press Media each AI can read and cites in your market.
  • Reviews Volume, rating and what your customers say.
  • Directories Name, address, hours and category: whether they match.
  • Forums Recommendations between people that AI reads and summarises.
  • Your website Your facts: what you do, where, for whom and since when.

If your facts are unclear in those sources, the AI recommends another business.

That is why we audit each step separately: which searches the AI runs, which index you are in, which sources cite you and what it knows about your business.

Inside, in detail

Technical note

What is a fan-out search?

Before answering, the AI splits the question into related searches by subtopic and source; Google calls it query fan-out. If your website does not show up in those searches, the AI never gets to read it, however good it is.

How we measure it
Technical note

Which index does each AI draw on?

AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini start from Google’s index; Copilot, from Bing’s; ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity also run their own search crawlers. That is why we check your presence in each index separately.

Technical note

What weighs in the final decision?

The AI chooses among the fragments it has retrieved. What counts is that they answer directly, carry concrete, dated facts and that other independent sources say the same. If your facts do not match across sources, the AI hesitates and names whoever is clear.

People no longer search: they ask.

It used to be that anyone looking for a supplier compared a list of links. Today they ask an AI and get an answer with a few names. Seven studies published in 2025 and 2026 measure the shift: who is asking, what happens to clicks and how much a visit from an AI is worth.

05 What happens to clicks

×2.2

If AI cites you, you get over twice the clicks.

Source: Seer Interactive · 53 brands, 5.5 M queries · ↗ (opens in a new tab)
Context and method

Across 53 brands and 5.5 million queries: a 2.07% click-through rate when the AI summary cites you, against 0.94% when it does not. The study itself warns that one account weighs heavily in the “not cited” group. That gap is what we work on.

06 What a visit is worth

×11

Visitors from AI sign up 11 times more often.

Source: Microsoft Clarity · 1,277 media sites · ↗ (opens in a new tab) Source: Similarweb (estimate) · e-commerce, worldwide · ↗ (opens in a new tab)
Context and method

Across 1,277 media sites: 1.66% sign-ups from an AI against 0.15% from search engines. Few visits, but they arrive decided. In online shops, the estimate is an 11.4% conversion rate from ChatGPT against 5.3% from organic search.

There is still no open, verifiable study of the effect on revenue. The closest thing measured is what each visit is worth, and we do not fill that gap with predictions.

Three steps, start to finish.

We audit, implement and measure from start to finish. Each step has a closed technical scope and a deliverable you can review.

  1. A magnifying glass scans the website, ticks every correct box and flags the failing one in red.

    01 · Diagnosis About 6 weeks

    We audit the eight links.

    What we audit

    • Access for every AI crawler: robots.txt as served, CDN, firewall and server logs.
    • Reading without JavaScript, and structured data that is validated and visible.
    • Presence in the Google, Bing and Brave indexes.
    • A panel of at least 50 real questions per market and language, in ChatGPT, Google and Gemini, with its 95% margin.
    • The sources each AI cites and the errors it repeats about you.

    Deliverable

A report with your 3 priorities, the truth sheet (your correct details, in one document), the visibility matrix (which questions and which AI you appear in), the source map and the 90-day plan already written.

  2. The pieces drop and fit into your website one by one; the last one, in red, is the key change.

    02 · Implementation 90 days, in 3 phases

We fix it in 90 days.

    What we implement

    • Days 1–30: crawler access, readable HTML, entity data and IndexNow.
    • Days 31–60: pages by intent, with a direct answer and dated facts.
    • Days 61–90: consistent data across profiles and directories, external sources and a new measurement.

    Deliverable

Every change applied and verified, with its proof, and a new measurement using the same questions. Nothing goes live without your approval.

  3. Every month the completed changes are ticked and the reading rises one point, in red.

    03 · Maintenance Every month

    We monitor drift every month.

    What we measure

    • Regressions: blocked crawlers, pages that stop being readable or drop out of an index.
    • Drift: sources that enter or leave, new errors and model changes, with dates.
    • Your Search Console, Bing and Analytics data, including visits from AI assistants.

    Deliverable

Technical monitoring and a note every month; every quarter, the full panel with its margin, compared with the previous one.

What people ask us.

Balisk is a company specialised in AI search optimisation (GEO) and technical SEO. We audit how AI tools crawl, index and cite you, fix it and monitor it every month.

Service

What exactly does Balisk do?

We audit and fix everything that decides whether an AI names you: its crawlers’ access, how your website is read, your presence in the Google, Bing and Brave indexes, the external sources it cites and the consistency of your business data. Then we measure in how many answers you appear and with what margin, across ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Gemini; for Copilot, with Bing’s data.

See the three steps
GEO and SEO

How does GEO differ from technical SEO?

Technical SEO gets search engines to crawl, index and rank your website. GEO starts there and adds what decides an AI’s answer: the fan-out searches it runs, the fragments it picks, the external sources it checks and what it knows about your business. We do both, because without the first there is no second.

Guide: what is GEO
Crawlers

Which AI crawlers should be able to reach my website?

At the least, Googlebot and Bingbot; each AI’s search index crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot; and the ones that read a page when someone asks, such as ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and Perplexity-User. Training crawlers, such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot, and the Google-Extended control are decided separately. We check it against what your server really responds, not just robots.txt.

Guide: AI bots and robots.txt
Structured data

Is adding structured data or an llms.txt enough?

No. Google says that to appear in its AI Overviews and AI Mode you need no special AI files and no specific structured data. Structured data helps identify your business, but only if every value is also in the visible text. What decides is being crawlable, showing up in the searches the AI runs and having other sources confirm your data.

Guide: appearing in Google’s AI features
Measurement

Why do you measure with a margin of error?

Because AI does not always answer the same: the same question returns different lists of businesses. So we never rely on a single answer: we measure with a panel of at least 50 questions and give your presence as a percentage with its 95% confidence interval: with 50 questions, a margin of about ±13 points. A change between two readings needs a clear difference to count as real: with 50 questions and a presence of around 30%, about 18 points.

How we measure
Commitment

Can you promise that AI will recommend me?

No, and be wary of anyone who does: nobody controls an AI’s answer. What we do is remove, link by link, the reasons it does not name you, measure it rigorously and show you every change with its date.

How we work
